The Best Halloween Books

October 20, 2021 Mallorie Owens
The best halloween books

Two of our favorite things in this house are reading and Halloween, so I had to share all of our favorite Halloween books! Most of these books are the ones I read during my favorite holiday every year since I was a child and a few are ones that we've picked up as new favorites since my daughter was born.

We love books, but we are also picky about the books we purchase and read again and again. So when I say these Halloween books are our favorites, please know that means they are ones I’m happy to read at least once a day for the entire month of October. Although, a lot of them end up being read several times in one day. They’re just that good.

Big Pumpkin

This one is by far our most read and Iris’ top pick.

Room on the Broom

I feel like I went way too long without hearing about this book. Instant classic and a top pick of ours.

Too Many Pumpkins

I love this story and the drawings are so lovely. One of my favorites to read first thing in the morning to Iris, curled up with a cup of coffee.

Scary Scary Halloween

This book by Eve Bunting has always been a favorite. It’s a classic, I love the illustrations and the ending makes me laugh every time.

The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything

This is a new one (to us) and Iris really enjoys it.

The Nightmare Before Christmas

I found the anniversary edition hardback when I was pregnant with Iris and immediately snatched it up. It’s beautiful and of course one of my favorite movies so it was a no-brainer. It looks like you can still get this edition on Amazon!

The Berenstain Bears Go on a Ghost Walk, The Berenstain Bears Trick or Treat, and The Berenstain Bears and the Ghost of the Forest

Any Berenstain Bears book, I know I’m going to love. I grew up loving the Trick or Treat one and the Ghost of the Forest. Iris and I found the Ghost Walk one last year and have been loving it. It’s a little spookier (for Berenstain Bears) than the Trick or Treat book, just a heads up.

The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown

The perfect book to read before watching the show. You could make a whole homeschool day based around this one ending in the movie in the evening.

Halloween Cats

Cute for kids who love cats and I always loved all of the costumes in this book.

Franklin’s Halloween

I’ve always been a fan of Franklin books and this one has a great Halloween story.

Ghostbusters Little Golden Book

If you know me, you know we collect Golden Books. We had to have this one since we love the movie!

Shake dem Halloween Bones

This book is a lot of fun and very different from the rest of our Halloween books. It makes you want to dance and I love that it has a different take on all your favorite fairy tale characters.

Spooky House

This was our first (and still Iris’ favorite) Halloween board book when Iris was a baby. The flaps are so fun for little ones to mess with and it has a cute story too.

Boo!

Another great Halloween board book with a simple story for little ones.

Creak! Squeak! Halloween

Iris has always loved this one because of the flaps and the noises it makes.

Lulu and the Witch Baby

This one is perfect if you have a big sister in the house with a new baby around. It looks like they’ve updated the pictures since the old version we have and there’s also Lulu Goes to School, which I just added to our Amazon cart!

Curious George Haunted Halloween

Who doesn’t love the mischievous monkey?

Scooby Doo Fall Fright

This is a Level 2 Reader, bonus points if you do the Shaggy and Scooby Voices while reading.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone: The Illustrated Edition

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Iris and I are also currently reading Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, which is perfect for this time of year. We have purchased all of the illustrated Harry Potter books that are out so far with the most amazing illustrations by Jim Kay. These are so beautiful inside and out, we display them as part of our decor year-round.

PRO TIP: Run to Amazon now if you want these Harry Potter books! We purchased them for around 40ish each and now they are all on sale for 20-25! Some only have a few left. Trust me, if you love Harry Potter you want these books. Also, I know there is a bundle of them, but I listed each individually because the bundle isn’t on sale and is currently not a better deal. I updated these links several times for you guys because the prices to make sure to list the best deal.

Lastly, I have to add in a few baking books that go along with a few listed above, because Halloween treats are so much fun and if you’re already grabbing a few on Amazon, you’ll want to grab these too!

The Official Harry Potter Baking Book

The Nightmare Before Christmas: The Official Cookbook and Entertaining Guide

Did I miss any of your Halloween favorites? I want to know what your favorite Halloween books are in the comments, let me know if we have the same ones or if you have a few I need to add to our collection!
